Talks: Hearts closing in on new boss.

Hearts are closing on the person they want to succeed Derek McInnes with Belgian Wouter Vrancken understood to be in pole position.

Discussions are said to be at advanced stage and barring any late complications, the 47-year-old is set to become the Jambos new head coach following McInnes’ departure to Rangers.

Vrancken was most recently in charge of Sint-Truiden in the Belgian Pro League and was named his country’s coach of the year after guiding the team into third place behind champions Club Brugge and Union Saint-Gilloise in his first season in charge.

Having resigned in the wake of that achievement, compensation will not be a hurdle to any deal.

With previous experience in charge of Belgian sides Lommel, Mechelen, Genk and Gent, it’s thought Vrancken is now relishing the opportunity of a move to the Scottish Premiership.

Hearts will be determined to build on last season’s success after being pipped to the title by Celtic in the closing minutes of the final league game of the season and have moved quickly to replace McInnes.

The Gorgie side return to competitive action next month when they take on Austrians Sturm Graz in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round.
