A development of 250 flats on the waterfront in Leith, part of a masterplan for the docks area, has been approved in principle by the city council.

The proposed redevelopment of the site near the Port of Leith tram stop will include commercial space for small businesses.

The apartments will be formed over a four-plot development with heights of up to six storeys with a focus on communal green spaces.

Pamela Smyth, chief legal and property officer at Forth Ports, said: “In recent years Leith has changed dramatically through investment and development to create an exciting place to live and work.

“The port has also been transformed and is now Scotland’s largest renewables hub currently working on the Inch Cape offshore wind project and, coupled with the benefits which will be unlocked as part of the Forth Green Freeport and new housing, will position Leith as a very attractive opportunity for the future.”

The Harbour 31 proposal has been designed by Comprehensive Design Architects based in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Cruden pipeline record

Housebuilder Cruden has enjoyed one of its strongest trading periods, reaching a development pipeline of 3,500 homes worth over £1 billion, with entry into new markets and ongoing investments.

The company has a near-even split between private and affordable housing.

Fraser Lynes, chief executive, said: “The housing market remains challenging, with geopolitical and economic uncertainty, affordability pressures and planning constraints continuing to impact the sector.

“However, we have spent a number of years building a business that is designed to perform through all stages of the market cycle.

“Today, we have the strongest pipeline in our history and the business is in exactly the position we intended it to be.

“We have invested in our people, strengthened our customer offering, expanded into new markets and secured opportunities that will support long-term growth. As a result, we are entering the next chapter of Cruden from a position of confidence.”
