Paul Trainer has been appointed editor of ScottishNews.com, part of Hero Media & Entertainment, ahead of a major relaunch of the site later this summer as a video-led, pan-Scottish digital news platform.

Mr Trainer joins the title from GlasgowWorld, where he played a key role in delivering local news and audience-focused journalism.

He brings extensive experience in digital publishing, newsroom leadership and multimedia storytelling at a time when ScottishNews.com, a sister title of Daily Business, is embarking on an ambitious new chapter.

The relaunch will see it evolve into a modern, video-first news brand serving audiences across Scotland with a mix of breaking news, entertainment, food and drink, politics, business, sport, lifestyle and current affairs content.

Mr Trainer began his writing career with the East Kilbride News and The Herald before managing magazine titles in Dublin for 12 years. He returned home to continue his career, launching Glasgowist ten years ago and maintaining a prolific output as a food and drink writer and a regular commentator on Scottish life.

He published a Best of Glasgow guide-book and established Best of Scotland magazine with The Herald in 2020 while spending two years as a weekly columnist for the Glasgow Times

In February 2023 he was appointed editor of GlasgowWorld, leading the title to become the fastest-growing local news title in the UK that year, establishing a new Scottish media brand with a broad multi-platform approach.

Joining him on the editorial team at ScottishNews.com is Mahnoor Sohail, who has been appointed senior video journalist. She brings significant broadcast and digital journalism experience, having previously worked as a video journalist with STV and Local TV.

The appointments form part of a wider investment programme by Hero Media & Entertainment, which is currently developing a bespoke television studio and podcast production facility at its East Kilbride headquarters.

The new facility will support production of video programming, podcasts and live-streamed content across ScottishNews.com and the wider Hero Media portfolio, including Dram Scotland, Hotel Scotland and Daily Business.

Mark Hollinshead, CEO of Hero Media & Entertainment, said: “Paul is one of Scotland’s most experienced digital journalists and editors, and we are delighted to welcome him to ScottishNews.com. His appointment marks a significant milestone as we prepare to relaunch the platform as a truly national, video-led news brand for Scotland.

“The media landscape is changing rapidly and audiences increasingly want engaging, high-quality video content alongside trusted journalism.

“We’re investing heavily in talent, technology and production capabilities to build something distinctive and exciting. Paul and Mahnoor are the first of several key appointments we expect to announce in the coming months.”

Paul Trainer said: “I’m excited to be joining ScottishNews.com at such a transformative moment. There is a clear vision to create a dynamic, modern news platform that reflects life in Scotland and delivers journalism in the formats audiences increasingly consume today.

“The combination of strong reporting, innovative video storytelling and investment in original content presents a fantastic opportunity.

“I look forward to working with the team to build ScottishNews.com into a must-read and must-watch destination for audiences across Scotland and beyond.”

Further editorial, production and commercial appointments are expected to be announced ahead of the relaunch later this summer.

Following the launch of Hero Media and Entertainment at the start of 2026 the company has made seven acquisitions as part of a strategy to “buy and build” to create a leading UK media and events business. These include Daily Business Group, Dundee Press Agency and KD Media.
