Spanish carrier Air Europa is launching its first-ever scheduled service into sub-Saharan Africa, establishing a direct aviation corridor between Madrid and Johannesburg.

In partnership with South African Tourism and local aviation stakeholders, the new route will officially debut on 24 June 2026. The expansion aims to capture rising travel demand from the Spanish market, where forward booking data and visitor arrivals have shown a sustained recovery trend.

Operating three times weekly, the route will deploy a Boeing 787 Dreamliner to optimise operational efficiency and enhance connectivity between Southern Africa, Europe, and Latin America via Air Europa’s primary hub in Madrid.

The inaugural flight is scheduled to depart Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport at 11:45pm on 24 June 2026, and is set to touch down at O.R. Tambo International Airport at 09:50am on 25 June 2026.

Meanwhile, to facilitate seamless regional travel for international passengers immediately upon arrival, Air Europa has secured local operational support through a newly signed unilateral interline agreement with South African airline CemAir.

Effective 23 June 2026, this commercial partnership enables inbound passengers traveling from Madrid to connect directly onto CemAir’s domestic and regional route network through a single itinerary and a streamlined baggage handling process.

The deal effectively gives Air Europa immediate commercial access to destinations beyond South Africa’s major metropolitan centres.
