Parliamentary speaker Thoko Didiza plans to support President Cyril Ramaphosa’s bid to halt his impeachment proceedings, putting her at odds with a panel of lawmakers who are conducting an inquiry into the nation’s head of state.
“The Speaker believes that the stance adopted is not only necessary but is entirely consistent with the respective roles and responsibilities of the Assembly versus those of the Impeachment Committee,” according to a statement released on Sunday by parliament.

Ramaphosa has applied to halt the process until a separate court challenge that he instituted last month – due to be heard in the Western Cape High Court on 15 and 16 July – is concluded.
The case stems from the 2020 theft of foreign currency hidden inside a sofa at Ramaphosa’s farm, a scandal that triggered allegations he concealed the crime and may have breached anti-corruption and foreign-exchange rules.
