Cape Winelands Airport and Stellenbosch University have finalised a formal cooperation agreement, structurally binding one of South Africa’s largest pending aviation infrastructure plans to the Western Cape’s premier research pipeline.

The strategic partnership is explicitly anchored around shared ‘smart’ and ‘green’ development frameworks. The transactional alignment connects academic research to the practical execution of the airport’s multi-decade infrastructure layout, which carries a total projected capital expenditure in the region of R8 billion.

The scale of the multi-billion rand project is intended to serve as a real-world platform for technical collaboration, spanning transport logistics, spatial planning, space and aviation research, and agricultural food processing.

The operational core of the agreement prioritises technical cooperation and future-focused engineering solutions explicitly linked to the physical airport expansion. Under the framework, master’s students within Stellenbosch University’s Engineering Management programme will execute applied research projects focused on areas of strategic operational interest to Cape Winelands Airport.

The agreement goes beyond standard academic placements, laying the groundwork for dedicated localised infrastructure to support physical product development.

Deresh Ramjugernath, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University, noted that the infrastructure rollout serves as a vital component for regional capacity building.

“This initiative speaks directly to the kind of partnership-driven development we believe in, where infrastructure, innovation and skills come together to create real impact.

“The Cape Winelands Airport project offers an opportunity to build a dynamic ecosystem that can unlock economic growth, support emerging industries, and position the region as a hub of innovation and opportunity,” said Ramjugernath.

From a labour and macroeconomic perspective, current projections indicate the R8 billion master layout will act as a primary driver of employment in the province.

The development is estimated to sustain roughly 35 000 direct and indirect jobs during its immediate construction and expansion phases. Over its first 20 years of operational maturity, the ecosystem is projected to support just over 100 000 direct and indirect positions.

Deon Cloete, managing rirector for Cape Winelands Airport, emphasised that integrating with a tertiary institution is a critical milestone to de-risk the aviation sector’s long-term human capital requirements.

“The airport expansion also presents opportunities to contribute towards the development of future aviation talent pipelines within South Africa. Through collaboration with Stellenbosch University and broader industry stakeholders, Cape Winelands Airport is interested to explore opportunities linked to aviation skills development, pilot training pathways, airport operations, engineering disciplines, and future-focused transport and logistics capabilities,” said Cloete.
