Sure, load shedding is largely a thing of the past, but the real pain is staring us in the face in the form of electricity tariff increases that are way above consumer inflation and will remain so for years to come.

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has approved 176 municipal and local authority tariff hike applications for the 2026/27 financial year.

These increases, which take effect from 1 July 2026, will affect the majority of South African households that receive electricity directly from their municipalities rather than from Eskom.

Take a look at the table below.

Electricity tariff increases from 1 July 2026 by metro

Municipality

Increase

Buffalo City

14%

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan

12.7%

Nelson Mandela Bay

10.09%

Mangaung (Centlec)

9.9%

City of eThekwini

9%

City of Tshwane

8.8%

City Power (Joburg)

8.63%

City of Cape Town

7.5%

Source: Nersa

These electricity increases come at a challenging time for household finances.

Fuel prices have risen sharply in recent months, consumer inflation reached 4% in April, and the South African Reserve Bank’s recent 25-basis-point repo rate hike pushed the prime lending rate to 10.5%. The result is reduced disposable income and tighter monthly cash flow for many families.

Marc du Plessis, executive head of Looksee, Standard Bank’s home efficiency platform, says above-inflation tariff increases look set to stay for the foreseeable future.

“It makes financial sense to install solar as protection against future tariff increases,” he says.

“It’s no longer a question of ‘Should I go solar?’ but ‘How to best structure to maximise savings?’.”

There are several ways to go about this.

If you want a quick, high-impact saving, the best place to start is with a solar geyser conversion.

That can save 40% on your electricity bill in the first month and these savings climb as tariffs increase.

The cost of this conversion starts at about R21 500 going up to R24 000 for a medium-sized house. Based on typical household spending on electricity, that conversion will pay itself off in about three years (though this depends on how much of electricity is spent on hot water).

A full solar 8kW conversion for a medium-sized house averages R136 000. This comes with two 5kWh batteries with 14 solar panels.

These systems can be acquired by rental or outright purchase.

“If you’re going to be in the house for just five or six years, look at a rental,” says Du Plessis. “If you plan on staying longer, then purchasing or financing the system makes sense. It protects you against tariff increases for years to come.”

The reality is starting to dawn on South African households: Electricity is no longer viewed as a stable monthly expense but as a core household cost with consistent upward pressure.

This structural shift is prompting more households to actively manage and optimise their power usage, especially as winter drives up consumption.

Solar as a financial decision

As tariff hikes become predictable, many households are turning to solar not as a lifestyle upgrade, but as a practical financial strategy to reduce long-term costs and limit exposure to future increases.

These are the two most common ways of acquiring solar.

Solar purchase (capital investment): This option delivers the strongest long-term savings for households with available capital or access to finance and a longer ownership horizon. While it involves higher upfront costs, it provides immediate reductions in electricity bills and strong protection against future tariff hikes.

Solar rental (cash flow approach): Designed to remove the barrier of large upfront costs, this model allows households to access solar through predictable monthly payments. Savings improve over time as municipal tariffs rise, and maintenance is included. It offers a lower-risk entry point for those wanting to start cutting electricity costs without a big initial outlay.

How solar options measure up *

Product

Cost

10-year net savings

Solar geyser conversion (cash)

R24 290
once-off

R107 000

Solar geyser conversion on energy loan

R650 per month

R90 000

8kW Solar system (cash)

R124 490
once-off

R169 000

8kW Solar system on energy loan

R2 920 per month

R83 000

8kW Solar system on home loan

R1 680 per month

R92 000

8kW Solar system rental

R2 140 per month

R14 000

* Assumptions:

· Based on a four-person household on post-paid tariffs from City Power;

· Average monthly electricity bill of R4 000, including service charges;

· One shower per person per day on average;

· Energy loan parameters: 60 months at prime rate + 4.5%;

· Home loan parameters: 10 years left in the bond with interest at prime rate; and

· Hybrid solar solution: 8kW inverter, 2x5kWh batteries, 10x460W panels.

Source: LookSee

The decision for many households is no longer ‘Should I go solar?’ but rather ‘How should I structure my solar investment to get the best financial outcome?’

With electricity prices continuing their upward trajectory, investing in solar – whether through outright purchase or a rental model – is increasingly seen as one of the most effective ways to protect household budgets for years to come.

Brought to you by LookSee.

Moneyweb does not endorse any product or service being advertised in sponsored articles on our platform.

#Heres #save #thousands #rand #electricity #tariffs #soar

If you thought the electricity crisis was behind you, think again.
