{"id":9638,"date":"2026-06-29T01:41:43","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T01:41:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fintechpulse8.com\/?p=9638"},"modified":"2026-06-29T01:41:43","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T01:41:43","slug":"greens-call-for-swinney-to-halt-government-bonds-daily-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fintechpulse8.com\/?p=9638","title":{"rendered":"Greens call for Swinney to halt government bonds \u2013 Daily Business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ross-Greer-1.png\" alt=\"Ross Greer\" class=\"wp-image-161381 lazyload\"\/><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"794\" height=\"549\" src=\"https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ross-Greer-1.png\" alt=\"Ross Greer\" class=\"wp-image-161381 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ross-Greer-1.png 794w, https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ross-Greer-1-300x207.png 300w, https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ross-Greer-1-768x531.png 768w, https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ross-Greer-1-600x415.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 794px) 100vw, 794px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Ross Greer: bonds are not the way forward<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Scottish Greens co-leader Ross Greer has called on the First Minister to abandon his plan to issue Government bonds, arguing that they risk being a \u2018gimmick\u2019 which costs more in the long term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">He said the new bonds, nicknamed \u201ckilts\u201d, also create a barrier to Scottish independence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The Scottish Government last week named nine banks supporting the inaugural \u00a31.5 billion bond, with the first issuance expected in late 2026 or early 2027. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Greer said that raising money through bonds would be more expensive than regular government borrowing from the National Loans Fund, which offers low-cost loans to public bodies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Fund managers have also held long-standing concerns that should Scotland become independent the yield would be pushed up by credit rating agencies because of the increased risk,\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The UK Government sets strict limits on the overall amount of money the Scottish Government can borrow, regardless of whether it is through the National Loans Fund, bonds or by other means.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Greer says that this would mean that the bonds will not increase the funding available to the Scottish Government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cScotland needs investment in homes, bus and rail services, schools and hospitals,\u201d he said. \u201cGovernments borrowing to build this kind of infrastructure makes total economic sense, but these bonds are not the way to do that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Scottish Government can borrow through existing routes which are cheaper and lower risk.
