\n

Three-year-old\u00a0Legora\u00a0is one of Europe\u2019s fastest-growing AI businesses. It works in the famously conservative\u00a0legal\u00a0sector\u00a0(think whiskery judges partial to a glass of claret at lunchtime).\u00a0Growth is stellar in a sector ripe for disruption. Backers include\u00a0NVentures, Nvidia\u2019s corporate VC fund, and\u00a0leading legal firm,\u00a0Bird\u00a0&\u00a0Bird, which specializes in the tech sector.\u00a0Its most recent\u00a0$550\u00a0million\u00a0Series D fundraise valued\u00a0the business at\u00a0$5.6\u00a0billion.\u00a0Not bad for a bunch of self-confessed \u201cengineers and hackers\u201d from Sweden.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Outside the world of lawyers, few would have heard of\u00a0Legora\u00a0until one of the cheesiest marketing ideas in history (\u201cWe\u2019re a\u00a0legal\u00a0business, how about getting Jude Law to talk about us?\u201d) became an advertising sensation. For weeks\u00a0across the U.S.\u00a0and Europe, Jude Law in a crisp white shirt and sharp grey suit\u00a0was appearing on social media\u00a0feeds and staring down from digital billboards\u00a0from\u00a0New York\u00a0to\u00a0London.\u00a0Name recognition soared.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSomebody internally said, given that we\u2019re building AI-powered law, what if we just got Jude Law\u00a0to be\u00a0AI powered?\u201d Max Junestrand, the CEO and co-founder\u00a0of\u00a0Legora\u00a0told me. \u201cAnd\u00a0maybe one\u00a0or two bottles of wine later, we ended up committing to the idea.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Months of to-ing and fro-ing with his agent later (Law was concerned that\u00a0Legora\u00a0might be a here-today-gone-tomorrow type of business) and the\u00a0project\u00a0was agreed.\u00a0\u201cNagging is an underappreciated form of negotiation,\u201d\u00a0Junestrand\u00a0said of\u00a0Legora\u2019s efforts to engage a film star more used to playing Vladimir Putin and Albus\u00a0Dumbledore.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was clear to us that AI\u2014and the intersection between AI and law\u2014was an interesting space, but the technology was not mature enough to solve real problems\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had to prove to him that we were quite sophisticated and serious about it\u2014he really liked the concept,\u201d\u00a0Junestrand\u00a0said. \u201cHe insisted on bringing his own cinematographer and scriptwriter, so we got the cinematographer from\u00a0Oppenheimer\u00a0<\/em>and a\u00a0Saturday Night Live<\/em>\u00a0scriptwriter, and together they came up with this magically funny concept [Law walks around a lavish house demanding the camera stays on his face while\u00a0he purrs \u2018collaborate seamlessly\u2019\u00a0and \u2018draft precisely\u2019]. The results speak for\u00a0themselves.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

This year,\u00a0Legora\u00a0crossed the $100\u00a0million\u00a0annual recurring revenue threshold and now says it serves 1,000\u00a0law firms\u00a0and in-house legal teams across 50 markets.\u00a0Alongside Bird & Bird, Linklaters and Cleary Gottlieb are also clients.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Junestrand\u00a0grew up in a remote part of Sweden where there were few ways to, as he describes it, \u201ccompete in the education system\u201d.\u00a0So, he became a video gaming\u00a0expert and coded in his spare time (a common origin\u00a0story for many tech entrepreneurs).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was clear to us that AI\u2014and the intersection between AI and law\u2014was an interesting space, but the\u00a0technology was not mature enough to solve real problems,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

That was until the release of ChatGPT and\u00a0Legora\u00a0was granted\u00a0access to\u00a0the GPT 3.5 model on the API\u00a0(application programming interface).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThat felt like my generation\u2019s internet moment,\u201d\u00a0Junestrand\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cIt was a clear line in the sand. There was a pre-API world, and then we got the API, and the\u00a0number\u00a0of greenfield opportunities and problems you could solve just exploded before us.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we started\u00a0out,\u00a0we were adventurous engineers and hackers who thought about what this technology could do, and now\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0at a point where\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0one of the fastest-growing startups in Europe.\u00a0We\u00a0have an enormous obligation to make sure that this technology continues to serve this [legal]\u00a0industry in\u00a0a good way. I feel like we have built 1% of all the software that we are going to build over the history of this company.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

London-based\u00a0Bird & Bird,\u00a0and its CEO, Christian Bartsch, have been a\u00a0central\u00a0part of\u00a0Legora\u2019s\u00a0expansion and\u00a0this\u00a0was\u00a0the\u00a0first international firm to partner with the\u00a0company.\u00a0It continues to\u00a0advise\u00a0Legora\u00a0on product development.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u00a0are passionate about what they\u2019re doing, they\u2019re\u00a0collaborative and trusted and [if they do] a few quirky things along the way, I say the best of luck to them,\u201d Bartsch said\u00a0of the Jude Law advertising campaign. \u201cAnd hey,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0made\u00a0law interesting at the dinner parties that I go to, so\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0not complaining too much.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Like many sectors, legal is gingerly feeling\u00a0its way in the new technological world. Traditionally conservative for good reason\u2014AI has been known to invent non-existent case law\u2014leading practitioners also know that much exists in the dusty drawers of the profession that needs\u00a0modernizing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey should have been disrupted years ago,\u201d Bartsch said\u00a0of the profession\u2019s workflows, many of which are still labor-intensive. \u201cYou see fragmented systems held together by middleware\u00a0and\u00a0a lot of manual processes in law firms.\u00a0You see really high-value strategic work underpinned by a lot of repetitive workflows.\u00a0So,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0ideal for AI.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you look at what AI is going to do,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not going to replace law firms, but law firms that use AI well are going to replace those that\u00a0don\u2019t.\u00a0This next generation of lawyers\u00a0is\u00a0going to be augmented.\u00a0Hybrid lawyers are going to have that human intelligence, but\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0going to be backed up by machine capability.\u00a0A\u00a0lawyer like\u00a0that\u00a0is\u00a0going to out-compete the marketplace.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a metaphor,\u201d Graham Norton shouts as his horse walks off\u00a0in the Revolut advert.\u00a0In a crowded market, anything that cuts through is worth paying for. If nothing else, Jude Law has made Legora famous.\u00a0<\/p>\n
