Anne Hathaway has a warning for anyone using ChatGPT to help write their job application thank you notes: She can tell. <\/p>\n
In the age of AI, it\u2019s never been easier to apply for thousands of roles at once. But as the Oscar-winning actress revealed while hiring for a recent role, it\u2019s never been easier to get caught, either.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was in the process of hiring someone, they were all very nice candidates, and they all sent me thank you notes,\u201d the Devil Wears Prada<\/em> star recalled in an interview with Hits Radio, before adding that every single one was written by AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n How could she tell? \u201cThey were all the exact same thank-you note,\u201d Hathaway said.<\/p>\n When the first one came in, she thought \u201chow nice, how professional,\u201d but when the ones landed in her inbox, word-for-word identical to the first, the penny dropped fast.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI was like, oh no\u2026 I see something I\u2019m not supposed to see,\u201d Hathaway added. \u201cSo I just want to warn you: If you\u2019re out there thinking that you\u2019re getting away with something, there\u2019s a chance that you might be revealing yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n And while she was able to see the funny side, her co-star Meryl Streep, who also sat in on the interview, voiced exactly what bosses in that scenario may be thinking.<\/p>\n \u201cSo many Anne Hathaways that you\u2019re going to apply to\u2014you just can\u2019t write it yourself,\u201d Streep rolled her eyes. Indeed, a few minutes of effort really could be the difference between getting the job and getting ghosted. And when it\u2019s a rare once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as Streep pointed out, the lack of effort doesn\u2019t go unnoticed.<\/p>\n \u201cOh my god, that would be an absolute killer,\u201d she added. \u201cNobody on that list gets that job.\u201d<\/p>\n As young people stare down an uncertain economy, a wave of AI-driven redundancies, and the worst job market we\u2019ve seen in 37 years, the pressure to automate writing thank-you notes is understandable.<\/p>\n For many candidates applying to hundreds of roles simultaneously, AI-written thank you notes aren\u2019t laziness\u2014it\u2019s the only way to navigate what\u2019s being described by experts, a \u201chiring nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n Plus, the thank you note was already contentious, with many arguing it\u2019s expecting candidates to do free work on top of an already gruelling process, including multiple-stage interviews, aptitude tests and even secret personality assessments.<\/p>\n The problem is that when everyone uses the same tools, with the same prompt, to regurgitate the same sounding note, they don\u2019t just fail to stand out\u2014they actively look uninvested in the company and the role.<\/p>\n And in a job market where one young man with a master\u2019s degree applied to thousands of positions for over six months without a single callback, there are so few ways to stand out among the millions of unemployed young people fighting for a job.
