{"id":7887,"date":"2026-06-18T07:12:41","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T07:12:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fintechpulse8.com\/?p=7887"},"modified":"2026-06-18T07:12:41","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T07:12:41","slug":"regional-pizza-chain-closes-final-restaurant-after-51-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fintechpulse8.com\/?p=7887","title":{"rendered":"Regional pizza chain closes final restaurant after 51 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>A longtime regional pizza chain is preparing to close its final remaining restaurant, ending a business that operated for more than five decades.<\/p>\n<p>While national brands, including Domino&#8217;s, Pizza Hut, and Papa Johns, have continued to expand their reach across the U.S. pizza market, smaller regional operators have faced growing pressure from rising operating costs and shifting consumer spending patterns.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1975 in Tenleytown, Washington, D.C., the restaurant built a loyal following through its made-to-order pizzas and local roots, eventually expanding into multiple locations across the metropolitan area and becoming known for helping introduce Chicago-style deep-dish pizza to the region.<\/p>\n<p>The closure comes as restaurants across the industry continue to face elevated food, labor, and occupancy costs.<\/p>\n<h2>Armand&#8217;s Pizzeria &amp; Grille confirms closure of its final location<\/h2>\n<p>Armand&#8217;s Pizzeria &amp; Grille confirmed it will permanently close its last remaining location in Rockville, Maryland, on June 20, 2026, bringing its 51-year run to an end.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After much thought and consideration, we are forced to make the difficult decision with a heavy heart to permanently close Armand&#8217;s Pizzeria &amp; Grille,&#8221; the restaurant owners said in a statement shared on social media.<\/p>\n<p>According to the company, sustained financial pressures contributed to the decision, including higher food, labor, and operating costs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The profit margin is so small it&#8217;s just too much work to continue at the current pace,&#8221; co-owner Chris Sappe told Bethesda Magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Sappe also said the business had faced substantial rent increases and suggested that lease negotiations may have helped prevent the closure.<\/p>\n<p>At its peak, Armand&#8217;s Pizzeria &amp; Grille operated 14 locations across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, according to NBC News 4. According to the\u00a0National Restaurant Association, both\u00a0food and labor expenses have risen about 35% over the past five years.<\/p>\n<p>Industry data further illustrate the challenges of maintaining long-term restaurant operations.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 17% of new restaurants close in their first year.\u00a0Additional industry estimates compiled by\u00a0Oysterlink show that about half close within five years, and only\u00a034.6% remain in operation for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, customers have become increasingly selective about discretionary spending, creating additional pressure on restaurant traffic and sales.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0National Restaurant Association\u00a0survey,\u00a060% of restaurant operators reported lower customer traffic in December 2025, compared with 51% the previous month.<\/p>\n<p>Industry experts point to changing consumer expectations around pricing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In strong economic environments, price increases have historically been tolerated by restaurant guests,&#8221; food industry executive\u00a0James O&#8217;Reilly told FSR Magazine. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over the past few years, that&#8217;s become far more difficult.
