The promise of sovereign AI is that a country can keep its models, data, and compute power at home. But there\u2019s one critical component that has to come from outside: the chips.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cToday, there is no equivalent in Europe,\u201d said Timoth\u00e9e Lacroix, cofounder and chief technology officer of French AI company Mistral AI, referring to the GPUs, CPUs, TPUs, and other types of advanced chips that are for the most part made by U.S.\u00a0companies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure there are many alternatives that are going to be built, and we\u2019ll help them out if that\u2019s the case, but today it\u2019s really about getting control where we can,\u201d Lacroix said at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference in Aspen on Monday.<\/p>\n

Mistral has spent the past year extending beyond models and into infrastructure, with 50 megawatts of its own compute due this summer. The sovereign rationale is control at every layer of the technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me, it\u2019s really about giving our customers the choice on all layers of the stack for where they want to run what part of their workflow,\u201d Lacroix said. That includes private, agent-driven work on a company\u2019s own premises, and heavier inference hosted inside a customer\u2019s own country \u201cfor strategic autonomy.\u201d<\/p>\n

But silicon remains a missing piece of the sovereign AI puzzle.<\/p>\n

Lacroix said it\u2019s a bit too early for three-year-old Mistral to start thinking about designing its own Europe-based chip. However, \u201cif someone designs a great chip for transformers,\u201d Mistral would likely use it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are European companies that are up and coming, and in that case, we like to talk to them and help them out,\u201d said Lacroix. \u201cIt\u2019s always a longer game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniela Braga, CEO and founder of data marketplace Defined.ai, who spoke alongside Lacroix on the panel, said that political instability is pushing nations to rely on \u201ctheir own sovereign models, their own sovereign data.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Braga said Europe and the Middle East serve as necessary counterweights so that frontier AI isn\u2019t controlled by the U.S. and China alone. <\/p>\n

The topic came up during several panels at Brainstorm Tech. \u201cData sovereignty is real, and it\u2019s here to stay,\u201d Snowflake CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy said during a separate panel. <\/p>\n

For Mistral, being viewed as centrist is a benefit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not really about not being American,\u201d Lacroix said. \u201cThe goal is to be a global company.\u201d Coming from Europe, he said, the firm is \u201cseen as more neutral,\u201d which can appeal to customers who \u201cwant to be strategically autonomous.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for whether the Trump administration will take equity stakes in U.S. AI companies and what that might look like, Lacroix demurred.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI honestly don\u2019t know what the future looks like,\u201d said Lacroix. But he added, \u201cWho owns that power is very important.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
