Democratic Gov.\u00a0Gretchen Whitmer\u00a0of Michigan said Thursday she has \u201cnothing to announce\u201d about a possible 2028 presidential bid, stepping back from her comment hours earlier that she will not run for president after leaving office later this year.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cYou know, I never thought I would run for governor, so I guess I should know better than to say any of it. Never say never,\u201d Whitmer said when asked later Thursday about the remarks.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this juncture, I\u2019ve got nothing to announce,\u201d Whitmer said during an onstage interview following her annual speech at the Mackinac policy conference.<\/p>\n

Whitmer has long been viewed by some Democrats as a possible White House contender after her decisive election victories in the closely contested state that Republican Donald Trump has carried twice in presidential votes. Whitmer is term-limited and will be done after this year.<\/p>\n

For months Whitmer had offered\u00a0only cautious answers\u00a0about her political future. She seemed to put an end to the speculation during an interview earlier Thursday, telling\u00a0Fox 2 Detroit: \u201cI think there will be a robust group of people running for president. I will not be one of them in 2028.\u201d<\/p>\n

But she backtracked later in the day, saying she wanted to \u201ccorrect the record.\u201d Whitmer said she was answering the \u201c100th question of the morning about it\u201d and said she wasn\u2019t making any plans.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess I\u2019ll smile and say, \u2018I\u2019m going to stay focused\u2019 and leave it at that for now,\u201d Whitmer said.<\/p>\n

Whitmer has previously said she plans to take time before deciding on her next move politically.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know that I\u2019ll put my name on the ballot again. I\u2019m just not sure,\u201d Whitmer said at an April breakfast in Detroit. \u201cBut I also am 54 years old. I got a lot of gas in the tank.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Mackinac conference has become a hub of presidential speculation, with former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin \u2014 both considered possible 2028 contenders \u2014 also in attendance.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there was someone I believed in, I\u2019d be all in,\u201d Slotkin told The Associated Press. \u201cBut I\u2019m not taking it off the table because I want to be a part of that next generation of leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
