And that’s on top of other key expenses, like gas, going up.

It’s not surprising that shoppers are making changes to their grocery habits. But that could be bad news for retailers like Costco, which rely on shoppers stocking up and spending more every time they visit.

Higher grocery prices are changing consumer behavior

Although inflation cooled in June compared to May, it’s hard to ignore the fact that prices are still elevated across numerous consumer categories. That’s forcing many people to make hard choices, particularly in the grocery category.

A good 61% of shoppers in the United States and United Kingdom have changed how much food they purchase because of higher grocery prices, according to the aforementioned Relex survey.

Related: Sam’s Club just made a big move Costco won’t consider

The survey found that 46% of respondents have cut back on snacks and junk food, making it the most commonly reduced category. Another 39% said they’ve reduced their beef purchases, while 34% reported buying less alcohol.

These findings could be significant for Costco. The warehouse club model has long encouraged shoppers to buy in bulk, helping families lower the cost per unit while increasing the average transaction size.

But if consumers become more focused on limiting their grocery spending overall, they may become less willing to purchase in bulk or engage in impulse shopping.

Even if Costco shoppers continue renewing their annual memberships, spending less during each visit could make it more difficult for the company to maintain the strong comparable sales growth investors have come to expect.

Shutterstock

But there’s some good news for Costco

Not every trend highlighted in the survey above points to weaker sales for Costco. The data also found that 47% of consumers have switched to private-label products as they look for ways to stretch their grocery budgets.

That trend could play directly into one of Costco’s biggest competitive strengths – its Kirkland Signature private-label brand.

Kirkland has built a reputation for offering quality products at prices that are often lower than comparable national brands. The product line spans nearly every department in Costco warehouses, including groceries, beverages, household supplies, health products, and apparel.

As shoppers search for better value, many may choose Kirkland products over more expensive name brands instead of eliminating purchases altogether. That could help Costco offset some of the pressure created by consumers buying fewer discretionary items.

As retail expert Zel Bianco told RetailWire, “Given that so many families are struggling with the crazy high prices of almost everything they need today, it’s no wonder that Costco and the Kirkland brand continue to grow.”

More Retail:

Costco sees major shift in member behavior

Retail chain shuts all locations as legal changes hit industry

Costco makes major investment in online shopping for members

While ongoing grocery inflation may encourage consumers to spend less overall, their growing preference for private-label products could provide Costco with an important advantage over competitors that have weaker store brand offerings.

And if shoppers continue prioritizing value above all else, the Kirkland brand could help Costco weather changing consumer spending habits and still come out a winner.

Maurie Backman owns shares of Costco.

Related: Costco makes big investment to keep members coming back

#Big #store #Costco

For years, Costco has benefited from shoppers stocking up on bulk groceries, snacks, beverages, and household essentials to save money over the long term. But persistent inflation is causing many…

[246
237,1047,1444
post-12219","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-popular","tag-big","tag-costco","tag-store
["GET
